Being a single mom is one of the hardest jobs in the world. Not only do you have to worry about taking care of your children, but you also have to juggle work, bills, and household chores. Continue reading to find out how you can get what you need when you don’t have the money to do so.

Financial Hardship Doesn’t Have To Be Your Story

Being a single mom puts you at high risk for financial hardship. Pew Research found that 30% of single mothers and their families live in poverty. You don’t need me to tell you about the struggle; you are living it.

You will find blogs telling you how to make more money or save more. I have even written about how to take control of your finances after divorce. There is one way to get what you need that you have not considered: Bartering.

The One Way To Get What You Need When You Don’t Have The Money

Bartering was a lifeline for me.

A couple of years after my separation, I had a friend who had more money than I did as a single mom, and I had more time than they did. So, they would pay for the groceries, and I would do the cooking for the week and get half of what I cooked. It was a win-win for both of us.

As A Single Mom, What Can You Do To Help Your Family?

What skills do you have that someone else may need? Think outside of the box. What may come easy for you may be a big struggle for someone else. They may be either willing to pay you or trade services.

Think about what you have heard your friends mention that they need that you can provide. Did your hair stylist say she would love someone to clean her house the last time you got your haircut? If you like to do and are good at cleaning, offer to trade services.

Here are a few skills you may have that you are overlooking.

  • Cooking
  • Cleaning
  • Babysitting
  • Planning Parties
  • Shopping for Christmas gifts
  • Wrapping gifts
  • Landscaping
  • House Sitting
  • Dog Walking
  • Carpooling
  • Tutor
  • Decorating for the holidays

Do you realize how many things you can do that would be helpful to someone else? What may come easy to you may be what someone else needs to free up more of their time, or they don’t want to take time to learn your skill.
